Anyway if you’ve received a similar email and it seems smelly to you then consider making a complaint to ICANN

…the CAN-SPAM Act act is meaningless in Australia so please stop citing it as a reason why your stupid email selling SEO services isn’t spam. I don’t give a rat’s arse and as I keep saying “if it looks like spam, smells like spam, and tastes like spam, then it is spam”.

p.s

Even funnier are the dickheads that cite the non-existant Bill S.1618, section 301. Yes I’m looking at you Mr Munjial from OTS Solutions of India. You’ve just lost yourself a potential client :-)

Under Bill s.1618 Title III passed by the 105th U.S. Congress this mail can not be considered Spam as long as we include contact information.

Is India becoming the home of bad SEO? It seems to be the source of most of the inappropriate directory submissions and link request emails that we receive. Anyway, the clown below was silly enough to demonstrate the poor quality of his service by trying to submit a link for his own SEO business on to a dating directory.

I wonder what they charge to submit your website to 1000’s of inappropriate directories? People like these should be avoided.

Hello,

When websites change - part 1.

Posted in Link Exchange on June 26th, 2007

What to do if a link partner changes their site content?

Personally I’m not particularly fond of terms like ‘link partner’ and I can’t see how linking to another persons website somehow implies some sort of ‘partnership’ exists. We much prefer to make links to sites based on their usefulness to our audience rather than react to some out of the blue ‘link partnership’ request.

One problem we’ve found is that the life of many websites can be fairly short and what was a good “quality content” site this week could easily become a spammy ad filled holding page next week. There are plenty of people who would love to try to monetize your domain. All it takes is for you to loose interest in the site and let the domain renewal lapse. Many domain registrars immediately try to take advantage of this by placing your lapsed domain on their own holding page till the renewal holding period has expired. Then if the domain has potential it will be snapped up by one of the many people who trade in used domain names. The luckier domains find themselves on new content rich sites, however many unfortunate domain are forced to spend their remaining lives as spammy auto-generated links pages.

Dear Trademark Holder, get a clue ..!

Posted in Directory Submission on May 26th, 2007

Nothing get my hackles up like receiving an email like this.

You are in trademark violation by using our trade mark, ******** in your search links. Google has already removed all references and sent and email to our attorney confirming this. Please cease and desist from using our trademark as links to your website.

Now besides the overall offensive tone of this email, the sender completely fails to identify the pages from the website that infringe on the trademark. Not only that, a quick search reveals that though they’ve submitted a trademark application, it hasn’t yet been approved. Also, as far as I can tell, Google hasn’t removed any links to the pages in question.

So is someone spinning a porky or are they just being a little bit flexible with the truth?

As an alternative approach you could try a letter like this.

Dear Webmaster,

we have recently submitted a trademark application for the words ******. A search on Google shows that your webpage http://****** contains content that may infringe on our trademark. Please be advised that unauthorised use of our trademark is an offense under [insert relevant law here] and may result in legal action if you continue to use our trademark in this way,

regards

The trouble with Sensis…

Posted in Losers on August 2nd, 2006

Sensis is a search engine owned by the Australian telco Telstra. As far as I can tell it was meant to be a Google killer for the Australian market. However, after an initial burst of traffic, I’m now seeing referrers from sensis.com.au trickling down to virtually nothing. Here is an example from one of our sites. The site has about 2000 unique visits per day and ranks well in the Sensis SERPS for our main keywords.

Month Sensis referrers
July, 2006 6
June, 2006 3
May, 2006 10
April, 2006 21
March, 2006 22
February, 2006 17

The other main Australian search engine, Web wombat, doesn’t fair much better. As much as I’d like to support the local search engines, I currently can’t see my businesses getting any real benefits from these search engines.

When “tell a friend” goes bad. #2

Posted in Losers on July 14th, 2006

Recently received the following email to one of our support email address.

******** just sent you this link:

https://namesdatabase.c*m/1l.pl?c1=**********

Instructions

1. Click on your link above to activate it.

2. Complete your info to enter the Web site.

****** selected you for this on 07-04-2006 05:50 ET.

I think there is a good argument to be made for “Tell a friend” scripts and viral networking sites to filter email address that are obviously not personal addresses. For a start your could at least eliminate:-

root
webmaster
support
sales
admin
mail
ticket
billing
accounts
enquiry
membership
subscriptions
majordomo
lists

and there are heaps more.

Link request spam

Posted in Link Exchange on July 14th, 2006

I’ve just had the best idea. It is so original. No one has ever done it before.

You see what I’m going to do is create a really lame directory site on some lame .info or .biz domain (’cause all the best .coms are taken).

Then I’m going to add people to my directory and email to tell them to tell them that I’ve linked to them. That will publicise the site without it being spam and if I’m lucky they will link back to me.

Wow this is such a great idea. I’m such a genius.

Dear webmaster,

I’m the <insert lame job title> at <insert lame .info or .biz domain name>

I’ve collected quality links to other website that related on the Internet on my links page.

I came across your site and feel that it’d perfectly fit in my collection of quality links about <insert field your lame business specialises>.

I’ve already placed a link to your web site along with a description at <insert lame .info or .biz domain name>/<insert vaguely relivent category>.

I’d appreciate if you’d place a link back to my site using the following link and description:
Title : <insert lame of your lame website>
URL Address : <insert lame .info or .biz domain name>
Description : <insert lame decription of your lame website>

If you’d like the description of your site modified or if you have any other cross-promotion ideas just drop me a line.

<insert lame apology>

Best regards,

<insert made up name>
<insert lame job title>
